Coconut-Breaker-Extractor-Grater (Funded by KSCSTE)

Coconut plays an important role in the economic, social and cultural activities of millions of people in our country. India is a major producer of coconut in the world.Every part of coconut is very useful to us. Its husk, its shell, its water, its fruit, all are very useful to humans. But the homemakers find it very difficult to break and grate a coconut.Currently there are no machines that can be used to break, collect coconut water, and to grate coconut pieces simultaneously.C BEG is a low cost, compact coconut machine which can break, extract and grate coconuts without any direct contact between the tool and hand.
Device for generating electricity from speed breaker (Funded by IE(I))

The goal of this project is to show the detailed study of how speed breakers can be used as a source of power generation. The implementation of the mechanism for this project would give an economical genesis of electricity, avoiding wastage of power in any form. The basic principle is a simple conversion from mechanical to electrical energy by using the vehicle weight (potential energy) & motion (kinetic energy). The number of vehicles on the road is increasing rapidly, so we can convert the total energy of these vehicles into electricity. The application of quick return mechanism helps in electric power generation efficiently as compared with other mechanisms.
Experimental evaluation of rheological, thermal and tribological properties of vegetable oils added with nanoparticle additives for lubricant applications (Funded by KSCSTE)

Tribological properties determine the efficiency of lubricants in working environments. The synthesis of Ceria-Zirconia (Ce-Zr) hybrid nanoparticles are achieved using the bottom-up approach of chemical processing namely Precipitation Method (PM) and their characterization was done using High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HR-TEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. The oxidative and thermal stabilities of coconut oil fro its utilization as a base-oil was performed using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) techniques. The tribological properties of nano-lubricants formulated from coconut oil added with Ce-Zr hybrid nanoparticles are studied using a pin-on-disc tribometer. The experimental data was used to develop a Response Surface Model (RSM) formulated using Box Behnken Design (BBD). The significance of the various factors is checked using ANOVA, Regression Analysis and also by verifying the Normal Probability Plot. The results proved the credibility of the formulated nanolubricant.
Design and Fabrication of a Water Wheel Pump (Funded by KSCSTE - INNOVATE)

Water Wheel Pump is a project that aims at pumping water from flowing water bodies like rivers or canals to the nearby areas. Basically this device pumps water without the use of electricity for its operation, instead it works on the energy of flowing water. The flowing water rotates the circular wheel shaped assembly which drives the pump. Thus water is pumped out of the flow.
Development of a Sustainable, Eco-friendly and Biodegradable nano-grease from coconut oil and studies on its various thermo-physical and tribological properties for commercial applications (Funded by KSCSTE - INNOVATE)

The ceria (CeO2) nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical processing, due to its better control on particle size and morphology. The characterization techniques named Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) AND Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) were carried out to confirm the formation of ceria nanoparticles. A uniform suspension of coconut oil added with ceria nanoparticles was formed using an ultrasonicator. Further, the fatty acids in coconut oil treated with Lithium Hydroxide (LiOH) salt in definite proportion resulted in formation of the desired Nano Lithium Grease (NLG). Finally, the tribological properties such as coefficient of friction (COF) and specific wear rate (SWR) of the formulated NLG was evaluated using a four ball tester. The results envisioned the credibility of the same for future prospect in commercial applications.
Enhanced exhaust heat recovery using Brayton cycle turbo charging in turbo diesel engine (Funded by CERD)

An emerging topic of research in the field of Internal Combustion engines is waste heat recovery techniques. This field has been gaining popularity rapidly owing to the immense demand of energy efficiency in engines and the fact that most I.C engines are able to convert only 30% of the actual chemical energy in the fuel to useful work. It is estimated that a major chunk of the energy obtained through combustion is lost by means of heat carried by the coolant or the exhaust gas. Out of all the waste heat recovery systems one of the most common waste heat recovery systems seen nowadays is the conventional turbocharging technique. This technology works on the same basic principle of harvesting the thermal waste energy contained in the exhaust.
Development of jute fiber reinforced natural rubber composite materials and the determination of its mechanical properties (Funded by KSCSTE)

Composite materials are a combination of two or more different components which generate a substance with performance characteristics exceeding those of individual ones. Natural fibre based composites are gaining attention these days. Here we are reinforcing jute fibre with natural rubber. Natural fibre reinforced biodegradable composites are good alternatives for conventional materials due to cheaper cost, eco-friendly, recyclable and bio degradability. Jute fibre of different lengths are selected and it is mixed with natural rubber by allowing it to pass through roller mills. The different lengths of jute fibre selected are 5mm, 10mm and 15mm. Mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength, tear strength, hardness and swelling characteristics of the composites are tested.
Design and fabrication of Pro-fit Tricycle (Funded by KSCSTE)

This project is the development of a multipurpose fitness device which can be easily assembled and disassembled to be used for various exercises. The project is called ‘Pro-Fit Tricycle’, as it achieves multiple functions of fitness as well as a transportation device. It is an assembly of multiple fitness exercises in a single unit and provides a number of workouts that are otherwise done in gymnasiums or by buying different fitness equipment.
Design and development of a novel surface water solid waste management system (Funded by CERD)

The water resources on earth are now facing the problem of excessive algae growth as well as floating wastes causing many problems to both environment and human beings. Presence of these algae causes serious threat for the aquatic plants and animals. It also exhibit a great threat to the water transport since algae gets clogged in the impeller of boats, causing malfunctioning. So a mechanism that can effectively collect this algae is relevant in rural society now and such a system is fabricated and tested successfully through this work.
Battery powered single occupant mobility apparatus(Funded by CERD)

Battery powered mobility apparatus is an electrically powered single occupant transporting equipment running on three wheels. This apparatus can be used as a transporting facility in large industries and for internal security purposes in airports and in other public spaces. The apparatus can also be used as a transporting medium in congested cities as the parking space required for this is very less and can be easily manoeuvred around. The apparatus is environment friendly as the equipment works on electric power which can be recharged.
