Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering. It is also referred to as the 'mother' branch of engineering. Another appealing feature of mechanical engineering is that the application base of this field of study is extremely broad and diverse. Almost all inventions during the ancient period and a vast majority in the modern era are direct contributions of one or the other application of mechanics.

Traditionally, mechanical engineers have to deal with concepts such as mechanics, thermodynamics, robotics, kinematics, structural analysis, fluid mechanics and many others. These concepts are applied in the process of designing state-of-the-art manufacturing units, different types of motor vehicles, aircraft and aerospace parts and a vast assortment of industrial machinery.

Programme Educational Objectives

After 3 to 5 years of completion of the graduation, our graduates will be able to:

PEO 1 - Enhance Professional Capability - They will apply mathematical, scientific and engineering principles for analyzing and solving mechanical engineering problems.

PEO 2 - Excel technically and foster continued learning - They will be competent to design and develop meaningful solutions for efficient utilization of man, machine, money and materials, using modern techniques and tools and nurture continuous learning.

PEO 3 - Address Social, Ethical and Environmental Concerns - They will deal with social, ethical and environmental concerns in technological advancements.

PEO 4 - Enrich Essential Management Skills - They will augment management skills along with teamwork and effective communication for successful completion engineering projects.

Program Outcomes

POs describe what students are expected to know or be able to do by the time of graduation from the program. The Program Outcomes of UG in Mechanical Engineering are:

1.    Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering fundamentals to the conceptualization of science and engineering models.

2.   Identify, analyze, formulate and research literature to interpret data for Mechanical engineering problems using first principles of mathematics and engineering sciences.

3.   Design solutions for Mechanical Engineering problems and develop systems, components or processes that meet specified requirements

4.   Conduct investigations, analyses and interpretation of data, and synthesis of information to arrive at valid conclusions to complex Mechanical Engineering problems

5.   Demonstrate skills to select and apply modern engineering tools, understanding the constraints, using appropriate techniques

6.   Demonstrate understanding of the societal and legal issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to engineering practice.

7.   Understand the impact of engineering solutions in an environmental context and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable development.

8.   Follow professional ethics with consequent responsibilities relevant to norms of engineering practice.

9.   Perform effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, in multi-disciplinary settings as well

10. Communicate technical ideas effectively with the engineering community and society by oral and written means.

11. Manage a project effectively, understanding the limitations of general business practices including risk and finance management

12. Engage in independent and life-long learning to meet global technological challenges

 

Opportunities

Since mechanical engineering is the broadest of all engineering fields, the job prospects on offer for skilled mechanical engineers are aplenty and unending. Mechanical engineers are required to design, test, manufacture, install, operate and maintain a wide array of machines and mechanical systems that are used in countless industries. Major industries that employ mechanical engineers include automobiles, space research, aeronautical, energy and utilities, air conditioning, bio-mechanical industry. Other major employers include giant manufacturing plants, air conditioning and refrigeration industry, turbine manufacturing plants, oil and gas exploration and refining industries and the agricultural sector.

Mechanical  Engineering Department

The faculty and students members do carry out path breaking inventions by utilizing the facilities in the college and also do provide technical support to various firms in designing equipments which inturn will horne their Academic & Practical Knowledge. 5 Workstations with configuration of 16GB RAM with Intel  Xeon Processor  enables the faculty and students to proceed with intensive and aggressive research in core areas.3-D printing facility enhances modeling and design skills. Above all, such activities inspire the student community to be a cause and reason for the betterment of the immediate society and country at large. The department invest extra efforts for nurtuting Competitive, Innovative and Entrepreneurship spirit through various programmes conducted through out the year.

Post Graduation in Machine Design

High profile laboratories exclusively for Post Graduate studies in Machine Design  include Experimental Stress Analysis Lab and Vibration measurements Lab. The Research Lab under Mechanical Engineering Department is very active and at present concentrate on the need of the hour-Alternate Fuels. Our experts undertake consultancy services to Industries, in the field of Condition Monitoring by vibration signature analysis. A full edged Computer Laboratory, licensed softwares like ANSYS, Solid works, Lab view etc, ASME e-journals, subscriptions of international journals , departmental library with ample titles for reference provides the right academic platform for the Post Graduate students.

MoU

MoU with AUTODESK, CADD Centre, KRDA  et al provide impetus to the efforts of the department to equip students and educators with the same tools used by industry professionals today to advance students' practical knowledge and application of design technology thereby addressing  real-world design challenges.

IE Grant  

Grant of Rs50,000/- for final year B.Tech projects by  The Institution of Engineers [India], Kolkata clearly depicts the quality and professionalism exhibited by the mechanical Engineering students in the National Level. 

CNC Machines  

CNC Machine tools are the most modern machine tools used in manufacturing industries. Two important CNC Machines-CNC Lathe and CNC Milling machines in Saintgits machine tool labs gives systematic training and exposure for the students in CNC machining system such as computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) programs.
