3 Day Workshop on 'RECENT ADVANCES IN TRIBOLOGY AND SURFACE ENGINEERING' - 19 - 21, December 2016

Inaugurated by:- Dr. A P Harsha, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT (BHU), Varanasi.

The Design Stream of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Saintgits College of Engineering organized a 3-day workshop on "RECENT ADVANCES IN TRIBOLOGY AND SURFACE ENGINEERING" on 19-21 December 2016 in the college campus.

Objectives

Importance of tribology for sustainable reliability cannot be over emphasized. It is reported that loss due to improper understanding and application of tribology is over 1.5% of GDP of the developed countries like USA. We can well imagine the state of affairs in our country, where, awareness about importance, understanding and application of tribology is rather low. Tribological failures are responsible for over 40% of breakdowns in industries. Therefore, engineers working in the field need to have a thorough understanding of tribological practices, so that proactive measures can be implemented in place of traditional corrective and breakdown maintenance practices.

The vital subject of tribology does not get appropriate coverage in the engineering curriculum in our country. However, it is noted that the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Kerala has recently introduced 'TRIBOLOGY' as an elective subject in the fifth semester of UG Mechanical Engineering curriculum (first initiative in the state of Kerala), which emphasizes the need and relevance of the subject in the course. Moreover, professional PG courses of different universities are offering the subject with highest priority as there is a strong need to promote the awareness of tribology among our industries and academia.

It was with this background that the Design Stream of Department of Mechanical Engineering, SAINTGITS College of Engineering, Kottayam organized the workshop on 'RECENT ADVANCES IN TRIBOLOGY AND SURFACE ENGINEERING' during December 19 - 21, 2016 at our prestigious institution to reinforce the need for continued education in Tribology - an interdisciplinary science and technology of friction, wear and lubrication. The program was intended to provide a National platform for interaction between renowned Tribologists of the country and the participants, comprising teaching professionals, research scholars, PG and UG scholars and practicing engineers from Indian industry. Also this program intends to identify the areas where current research is being focused and to promote its viability.
