Swimmer bars are inclined stirrups which can be used in beams, to reduce the amount of steel. Analytical and experimental research are being carried out to find the effectiveness of swimmer bars at different configurations.
Offshore is an hot area of research in department.Ministry of New and Renewable energy, in their offshore policy published in 2016, has identified offshore turbine support design as a major area to be explored by India. Research have been conducted investigating upon the feasibility of compliant deep water support for wind turbines. Apart from fixed supprts, compliant supports floats or move freely with waves, dissipating much energy of waves, making the section demand less and thus making deep water platforms economical. Presently feasibility of articulated towers, a type of compliant offshore platforms, to suite as an offshore wind turbine platform at Tuticorin is investigated.
It iscommon that end beams are subjected to torsion and in many cases torsion occuring on beams may be unforeseen during analysis of large buildings. In such cases due to overestimating the torsional capacity of beams, cracks due to torsion may develop. Research have been carried out to investigate upon effective retrofitting techniques of beam failed under torsion and bending.
Experimental investigations are going on in the area of bubble deck slabs. The concept is to remove concrete below nuetral axis using bubbles, made out of waste plastic. A reasonable amount of concrete is saved and strength properties shows that this is a good alternative to convensional slabs.
Alternatives for development length at exterior beam column junction
As per the EQ design codes, the top bar of beam should go deep in to the column well below the soffit of the beam. But this creates practical constrains in the site. Experimental and analytical Investigations are carried out to seek out other convenient alternatives, which may give equivalent bond strength, to solve the problems
Effect of redundancy on earthquake performance of structures
All the design theories in codes were developed with a concept that enough redundancy are there for the building. But now a days due to scarcity of land,even single bay buildings of much height are constructed.
The earthquake vulnerability and its relation with redundancy is investigated to propose modified response reduction factor for low redundancy buildings.
