Saintgits SAE BAJA Team has won the 1st Prize of Rs 60,000 in the Rock Crawl Competition held at IIT Ropar. The Saintgits team Striderz Racing 5.0, were the first team from Kerala to win a title in Baja Racing. 2019 BAJA SAE had a participation of 363 teams across the country. BAJA SAE is a prestigious intercollegiate design competition organized globally by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), USA. Teams of students from universities all over the world including Saintgits College of Engineering design and build small off-road cars. The BAJA SAE tasks the students to design, fabricate and validate a single seater four – wheeled off road vehicle to take part in series of events spread over a course of 3 days that test the vehicle for the sound engineering practices that have gone into it, the agility of the vehicle in terms of gradeability, speed, acceleration and manoeuvrability characteristics and finally its ability to endure that back breaking durability test.

The objective of the competition was to simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Each team’s goal was to create a safe, easily transported, easily maintained and fun to drive prototype. Teams were free to design their own transmissions with speed restrictions of 60kph. The vehicles were tested for acceleration, manoeuvrability, rock crawl and suspension & traction. Vehicles had to undergo endurance tests of two hours for eBAJA to test their ability to operate continuously and at a speed over rough terrain containing various obstacles.
