Value added courses are designed to fill curriculum gap of the programmes offered. Always university curriculum cannot offer all the fields where students essentially need skills. Value added courses are conducted to ensure skill development of students and make them industry ready.
Our Department offers value added courses in 3D Drafting (AutoCAD 3D, 3Ds Max), REVIT BIM Architecture, Primavera, MATLAB, LaTex, Tekla Structures, SAP, ETABS, STAAD, Building Design Workshop, Total Station Survey Camp and Advanced experimental testing.
Among these wide spectrum of courses we offer, a student could select any in each semester, so that he/she should undergo at least seven of these courses based on his/her priority.
1. 3D Drafting:
Although university curriculum deal with 2D drafting and preparation of building plan in AutoCAD, in industry always a Civil Engineer need to prepare 3D plots of his building for the ease of presentation to clients. Even each and every room of buildings could be virtually made and could be presented to client for modifications before the structure is built. By undergoing this course student gets a clear idea of how to extrude a plan to 3D drawing using AutoCAD 3D and 3Ds Max. During this course student model a building in AutoCAD, export it to 3Ds Max for advanced editing and render it to a presentable image.
2. Revit BIM Architecture
Revit is a Building Information Modelling (BIM) software, where students are made to place intelligent elements like walls, doors, and windows. Revit generates floor plans, elevations, sections, schedules, 3D views, and renderings. They learn to optimize building performance early in the design process, run cost estimates, and monitor performance changes over the project’s and building’s lifetime. They Generate photorealistic renderings, create documentation with cut-aways and 3D views, and stereo panoramas to extend their design to virtual reality.
Primavera is construction project management software. Undergoing this course enable the students to plan, schedule, and control projects, assign resources to tasks, and track progress, monitor and visualize project performance versus plan, conduct what-if analysis, and analyze alternatives, allows schedule updates from multiple users at the same time, produce schedule and resource reports and graphics. This course will give a clear idea of how to manage a site scientifically using high end software tools.
Millions of engineers and scientists worldwide use MATLAB to analyze and design the systems and products before they are actually installed. The MATLAB platform is optimized for solving engineering and scientific problems. The matrix-based MATLAB language is the world’s most natural way to express computational mathematics. During this course student gains knowledge to solve civil engineering problems analytically using MATLAB codes.
LATEX is a word document editing software in which student get expertise in preparing project reports, thesis reports etc. They are also exposed to data editing and presenting options of LATEX.
6. TEKLA Structures
Tekla Structures is a building information modeling software able to model structures that incorporate different kinds of building materials, including steel and concrete. This course enable students to design a building structure and its components using 3D modeling, generate 2D drawings and access building information. Students learn steel and concrete detailing, precast and cast in-situ. They also create and manage 3D structural models in concrete or steel, and guides them through the process from concept to fabrication.
SAP is structural analysis software. In this students learn to analyse and design a building corresponding to different loads like dead load, live load, earthquake load, wind load etc. They are also introduced to advanced earthquake analysis tools like modal analysis, response spectrum analysis and time history analysis. Students also get a knowledge regarding ductility analysis of buildings, which is related to earthquake design.
ETABS is an industry friendly version of SAP, which is designed purely for building analysis and design. Students learn to analyse and design a building corresponding to different loads like dead load, live load, earthquake load, wind load etc. They are also introduced to advanced earthquake analysis tools like modal analysis, response spectrum analysis and time history analysis. Students also get a knowledge regarding ductility analysis of buildings, which is related to earthquake design.
STAAD is also a structural analysis and design software. In STAAD students are tought to analyse buildings and other special structures subjected to static and dynamic loading.
10. BUILDING DESIGN WORKSHOP
Although student learn about designing different components of building in different semesters, they are not exposed to design of an entire building. In this workshop, students are given a five storey building plan and soil information report. Based on that they are trained to analyse the building in any softwares providing all possible load combinations. Based on the results pile/raft/individual footing, plinth beams, columns, beams, lintels, staircases, slabs, watertank and retaining wall are designed by students. They also draft these design drawings as per specifications. They prepare a bar schedule and estimate the quantity of the same.
11.Total station survey camp
A five day camp on total station survey is conducted.total station is a sofsticated instrument used by civil engineers for surveying and setting out. Whole students are divided in to groups of 8, a total station is assigned to each group. They have to survey an area about 20 acres during this period and prepare the land and contour maps of the same. By this camp students learn the principles of surveying and they will acquire skill in using total station.
12. Advanced experimental testing
In this course students are exposed to advanced testing facility like testing of beams, columns and slabs in loading frame which they do not have in university syllabus. Students get introduced to advanced testing facilities like load cells, electrical strain guages, load indicators, strain indicators, mechanical strain gauges, deflection gauges , proving rings, high capacity CTM, non destructive testing.
