Report

The Department of Civil Engineering in association with ICI SAINTGITS student chapter conducted the programme – TRAIN the TRAINERS – a training session for all the faculties of civil department. The programme aims on sharing the working of latest laboratory equipment with all faculties of CE department. The programme was coordinated by the ICI staff-in-charge, Asst. Prof. Pinky Merin Philip and the corresponding lab in-charges took a session on the advanced and sophisticated equipment in their labs. The details of session are as follows:

1. ADVANCES IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING LAB – Day 1

Date: 23rd February 2023

The hands-on study various advanced equipment of structural engineering lab is conducted on 23rd feb under guidance of Dr. Nivin Philip. The session mainly focused on the push-pull jack for cyclic loading, water permeability test on concrete, RCPT procedures and freeze-thaw experiment details.

2. ADVANCES IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY – Day 2

Date: 24th February 2023

The session was handled by GT lab in-charge Er. Hanna Paul. The session mainly focused on the working of latest equipment like dewpoint potentiometer and automatic direct shear apparatus. Also, the lab in-charge explained the working of triaxial apparatus. She also discussed the importance of new research area in geotechnical field – unsaturated soil mechanics and the facilities available in the lab for the same research area.

3. ADVANCE IN MATERIAL TESTING LABORATORY I (STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LABORATORY) – Day 3

Date: 25th February 2023

The session was handled by the lab in-charge Er. Lakshmi P. The session was on the hands-on training on various experiments carried out using universal testing machine (UTM) like tension test on steel, flexural strength on wooden beam and double shear test.

4. ADVANCES IN SURVEYING – Day 4

Date: 27th February 2023

The surveying session handled by the lab in-charge Er. Vincy Koshy mainly focused on the working of Total Station. The session provided hands-on training on the various steps involved in total station like centring, levelling, resection and focusing.

5. ADVANCES IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY – Day 4

Date: 27th February 2023

The session on EE lab was handled by the lab in-charge Er. Arun G Sankar. The session focused on the working of ozone generator, spectrometer, working of flocculator and turbidimeter. Also, the lab in-charge explained the facilities and experiments available for research and consultancy works.

6. ADVANCES IN TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING LABORATORY -Day 5

Date: 28th February 2023

The session was handled by the lab in-charge Er. Jithin Kurian Andrews and Dr. Susan Rose. The session explained the working of wheel tracker, MERLIN, Benkelman deflectometer and dynamic cone penetrometer. The lab in-charge explained the various research and consultancy works carried out in the lab.

7. ADVANCES IN CONCRETE TESTING LABORATORY – Day 5

Date: 28th February 2023

The session was handled by the lab in-charge Er. Sunitha A Daniel. The session explained the mix design procedure as per new codal provision and hands-on session on the mix design was conducted.
