Team Striderz Racing of Saintgits College of Engineering, Pathamuttom Kottayam designed and manufactured an All-Terrain Vehicle for participation in the SAE India BAJA 2022 event organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) – the leading organisation for Automotive Engineersworldwide.

The team comprised of 27 undergraduate students of the Mechanical Engineering department of Saintgits College of Engineering, led by team captain Leon Vincent with Asst. Professor BibinVarkey& Mathew Joseph as faculty advisors. This is the seventh time Striderz team that have qualified for the annual SAE India BAJA main event.

Events began with Phase 1 where an online quiz and Team presentation was conducted in online mode(3-5 September 2021). Then the team  presented a CAD model of the vehicle at Phase 2 “Virtual BAJA” round held in online mode (8-12thDecember 2021) where 180 teams from all around the country participated and we are one among twelve teams to have qualified for the SAE India BAJA 2022 event from the state ofKerala.

Fabrication of the vehicle began in December, 2021 immediately after announcement of the results of Virtual BAJA. The whole manufacturing process was completed in February, 2022 and after real-world testing, the buggy was flagged off on 21thMarch 2022 by Dr.Josephkunju Paul C, Principal along withEr. Punnoose George, Executive Chairmanand Dr.  Jacob T Varghese, Head of the Department, MechanicalEngineering.

Team Striderz successfully completed the final competition held at NATRAX Automotive test track Pithampur, Madya Pradesh conducted during April6-10, 2022. The team have cleared all technical inspections and passed the brake test in the first attempt. The team participated for acceleration event, sledge pull, maneuverability test and completed the 4 hours endurance race. Six student members of our team cleared the BAT exam conducted as part of placement drive and four of them placed in Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

The vehicle is a single-seater off-road race-car capable of traversing rough and challenging terrain while still ensuring safety of the occupant. The buggy is built around a tubular space-frame chassis made of high-strength steel with custom-made suspension and steering components, and lightweight body panels, most of which were manufactured by the students themselves.Power comes from a 305cc Briggs and Stratton 10hp engine that drives the rear wheels via a CVT automatic transmission that was specifically developed for this particular vehicle.
