B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering
The four-year programme provides fundamentals of Chemical Engineering and computational skills through its multidisciplinary curriculum. The programme structure provides an optimal blend of core and elective courses. The core courses incorporate the seeds of Chemical Engineering principles in young minds and develop the skills of process design, planning, control, optimization, troubleshooting, and project management to work efficiently as a Chemical Engineer in a Process Plant. The students can utilize the well-equipped laboratories in the Department to practice the various skills and apply the Chemical Engineering knowledge that they gained through theory courses. These labs also familiarize the students with the modern software tools and packages for the design, monitoring and control of chemical processes. The offered elective courses span over broad subject areas with current relevance, and the student can choose the course on his/her interest to extend the capability to work in an interdisciplinary area.
The programme also includes mini project works for specific subjects and the main project work which the students carry out in great detail in the final year of the programme. Project-based learning enhances the critical thinking and problem-solving techniques that are central to technical education. These projects are also intended to provide good training for the student in Research & Development career and technical leadership.
In today’s competitive era, real-life exposure counts a lot. The Department is very keen on improving the practical knowledge and efficiency of the students to mould them as excellent professionals. In order to achieve this goal, the programme has included ‘Internship’ in a Chemical Engineering related organization for a specified period of time as a part of the curriculum.
The Department is also providing an option to acquire Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering. The Honours is intended for a student to gain expertise/specialization in an area inside the Chemical Engineering, and is particularly suited for students aiming to pursue higher studies and it will develop the skills to perform cutting edge research.
In order to customize the Chemical Engineering Degree of a student to suit his/her specific interest, the student can opt for Minor by learning a few additional courses offered by other Departments. Upon completion of an Engineering Minor, a student gains interdisciplinary experience and exposure to concepts and perspectives, which will enhance the employability of the student.
Value-added courses are offered by the Department as a supplement to fill the gaps in the curriculum in order to make the student a better professional. The Department also provides GATE training from the third year of study, enabling students to be competent enough to obtain Postgraduate Programs admission in premier national institutes and recruitment in few of the Public Sector Undertakings.
