The Institute of Engineers India (IE(I))

Saintgits students chapter of The Institute of Engineers India was inaugurated on July 30,2015 is the strongest professional organisation in the college, with more than 3000 B-Tech students from all the departments enrolled as members. The major IE(I) Saintgits Electrical division activities include paper presentation competition, webinar series, aptitude test competition, seminar competitions ,technical film show, poster competition, Project competitions etc.

Institution of Engineers (India) Students Chapter of Saintgits College of Engineering (Electrical and Electronics Division) organized a webinar   on 18th December   2023 from 10:00AM  to 11:00AM. Webinar  was on the topic “How to face a technical interview”.

                        The session was handled by Er.Mariya Sebastian, Electrical Design Engineer,Volvo, Sweden.The speaker explained about her experience in Volvo as a design engineer. She gave instruction to students regarding interview preparation and resume building.                         35 students participated in the webinar. Students and faculty asked questions during the interactive session. Session came to an end by 11:00AM .

      Institution of Engineers (India) Students Chapter of Saintgits College of Engineering(Electrical and Electronics Division) organized a webinar   on 03rd February 2024 from 10:00AM  to 11:00AM. Webinar  was on the topic “An overview of AI and its business implications”.

                        The session was handled by Mr. Roy Paul Mathew, Director, (Technology Transformation), Scotia Bank, Canada. The speaker explained the role of artificial intelligence in modern business. AI plays a significant role in investment banking by enhancing efficiency, decision-making, and client service. Key areas include risk management, fraud detection, financial analysis, research, etc. He elaborated on how AI is transforming investment banking by improving accuracy, efficiency, and personalised client experiences. 55 students participated in the webinar. Session came to an end by 11:00AM.

Institution of Engineers (India) students’ chapter of Saintgits College of Engineering (Electrical and Electronics Engineering division) organized a project exhibition competition on 21st May  ,2024, 10.00 am at CLC 306.

                        The competition was conducted for the eighth semester students of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department.42 students participated in the event. Students exhibited working model of projects. There were total eleven project groups. First prize was bagged by the project tiled “Integrated refrigerant gas leakage detection and automatic gas refilling system for condensers in air conditioners and refrigerators done by Lekshmi, , Anandhu Pradeep and Abin Shah Babu. Second prize was secured by Albin Biju Kuriakose, Adarsh K V, Shone Joseph and Devika Suresh for the  project titled  Gyrostabilized platform in ambulance”. Dr.Binu K Mathew (Professor, EEE department), Dr.Fossy Mary Chacko(Asso. Professor, EEE department),  and Er.Arun Sebastian (Asst. Professor, EEE department) were the evaluators for the competition.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE)

Saintgits IEEE SB was inaugurated on July 2, 2012 by Dr. S. Gopakumar, former deputy director, VSSC/ISRO and Advisor, IEEE Student Activities, Kerala Section. The IEEE student branch of the Saintgits College of Engineering continues to organize several technical as well as non technical activities in positive spirit. The Saintgits IEEE student Branch in association with the Saintgits Institute of Artificial
Intelligence and Machine Learning (SIAIML) organised a Distinguished Lecturer Program by Dr. Lizy K. John, Fellow IEEE, Professor, the University of Texas at Austin, also conducted webinar on the topic “The art of being unstoppable. IEEE SB conducted various workshops and Hackathons for students.

. Some of the events conducted by IEEE students chapter include

  • “Tailor Made Courses” – IEEE SSCS – This course is designed to enhance the employability of students and train them to meet industry requirements. The course is funded by IEEE-SSCS and its syllabus is approved by industry experts.
  • IEEE Kochi Subsection AGM – The contributions of Asst. Prof. Abraham George, Saintgits IEEE SB student branch Counsellor, towards IEEE was specially recognized by IEEE Kochi Subsection in the function.
  • Other activities – Workshop on Android development by Er Gitto Niclavose, IEEE Kochi Hub Wie Congress, IEEE PES Quiz for 1st year BTech Students, Technical Talk Organised by Saintgits IEEE WIE, 4th Conference on Solid State Circuits etc.

Indian Society for Technical Education(ISTE)

Department of Computer Science and Engineering had successfully deployed ISTE student chapter in 2009. All the faculty members of the department and many of the students are ISTE membership holders. Many programs are conducted under the banner of ISTE student chapter. Some activities organised are – Technical talk on ‘ANDROID OS’, Refreshment Course on Open Source tool etc.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Industry Application Society (IEEE IAS)

Saintgits IEEE IAS SB was inaugurated on June 22, 2012 by Dr. P. S. Chandramohanan Nair (Professor and Chairman, EEE department, Amrutha University). Saintgits IEEE IAS SBC was the third IAS SB chapter in the Region 10.

Achievements:

  • Dr. Pinkymol K. P. and Er. Ancy Sara Varghese become Senior IEEE members.

Events conducted by IEEE IAS students chapter:

  • Er. Polly Thomas had attended the student branch and gold congress held in Madrid on July 2012.
  • Organized SB Chapter workshop for IEEE-IAS members and faculty on December 21, 2012. Dr. Peter Magyar (IEEE-IAS CMD Chair from Hungry) was the Chief Guest of the Program and he delivered an expert talk on “The Electric Car and the Renewable Energy Sources – Hype or Solution”.
  • Industrial visit to Pallivasal generating station on December 16, 2012.
  • As part of the distinguished lecture series, a lecture was arranged by IEEE- IAS IAS Saintgits student chapter on January 22, 2014. Er. Blake Lloyd & Dr. Peter Magyar were the chief guests and Er Blake Lloyd delivered a talk on “Effects of modern variable speed drives on motor winding insulation” and Dr. Peter Magyar delivered a talk on “Opportunities and benefits to IAS members”
  • Industrial visit to NTPC, Kayamkulan on January 24, 2014.
  • Saintgits College of Engineering hosted 50th Anniversary celebration of IEEE-IAS on April 16, 2015. Er. David B. Durocher (IEEE IAS President) and Dr. Peter Magyar (IEEE-IAS CMD Chair) were the Chief Guests of the Program and Er. David B. Durocher (IEEE IAS President) delivered a technical talk. Dr. Peter Magyar delivered a brief talk about the contribution of IEEE IAS to society in past 50 years and about the benefits and opportunities provided by the IAS to its members. There was an interaction section with office bearers of IEEE IAS and faculty members of  EEE  dept.  at  Windsor Castle Kottayam along with Er. Srikand V (IEEE IAS Region 10 Area Chair)
  • Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of SAINTGITS College of Engineering is organizing this one week Short Term Training Program (STTP) on “Power System Stability and Protection” in association with IEEE IAS Saintgits SB chapter, to enhance the knowledge and skills of teachers during April 20-24, 2015.
  • Conducted Awareness Talk organized by Center for International Relationship Cell & IEEE PES/IAS SB for S5 and S7 students and their parents on “Higher studies Abroad”, by Ms. Flaby Mathews, Regional Manager, Santa Monica Study abroad Pvt Ltd. on October 11, 2018
  • The IEEE IAS SBC Saintgits college of Engineering in association with IEEE IA/IE/PELS Jt. Chapter Kerala conducted 2 day Proficiency Programme on ” ELECTRIC AND HYBRID VEHICLE ENGINEERING” on 30 and 31 of August 2019. The programme was sponsored by IEEE Industry Applications Society. his workshop contained theory modules, practical and demo sessions to understand EV design and architecture which was followed in EV industry. Mr. P Prasanthkumar from Haritha TechLogix Pvt.Ltd , Bengaluru handled the training sessions. The main objective of the workshop was to give a brief overview about the electric and hybrid vehicles design and currently used technologies in the field. Modeling and simulation studies of Electric & Hybrid vehicle were performed in MATLAB/ SIMULINK environment. Case studies on the state-of-the- art technologies used and the improvements made in the design of both electric and hybrid vehicles were studied by taking examples from Chevrolet, Tesla, Toyota etc.
  • Saintgits College of Engineering hosted the UST Global Coding Competition conducted by IEEE IES, IAS, PELS Jt. chapter Kerala Section on June 30, 2018.
  • The IEEE IAS and PES SBC in association with Saintgits College of Engineering conducted a hands-on workshop on the topic ‘Image Processing using MATLAB’ from May 15-17, 2019. The workshop was a three day programme with both Theoretical and Hands on session, which was taken by two eminent resource persons, one was Mr.Pramod Kumar Naik, Senior Applications Engineer and Mr. Manisankar P, Applications Engineer, Core-El Technologies, Bangalore.
  • IEEE Saintgits SB in association with SSC/PES/IAS/WIE society organized a panel discussion on the topic “Balance for Better world” as part of women‟s day celebration on March 15, 2019. The panel consisted of Prof. Mini Punnoose (Governing Board Member & Director MCA), Dr. Soosan George T (Dean, CE), Dr. Wilcy M (Dean CS & IT) and Dr. Jaimol Thomas (Prof & HOD EE). Panel discussed on topics such as -Balance for Better: A Dream or Reality for Women Around the world, General Misconceptions on Gender Equality, Work – life Balance: Balance drives a better Work World, Gender equality: A Teacher’ perspective and Importance of men’s support for Gender Equality.
  • Department of Electrical & Electronics in association with IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) chapter, IEEE SBC and PES SBC Saintgits organized a webinar on the topic “Test, Measurement and Utility Detection Devices for Industrial Electrical Maintenance” on May 30, 2020.   • IEEE Industrial Applications Society (IAS) chapter in association with IEEE Student Branch Chapter (SBC), PES SBC and Department of EEE Saintgits would like to host a workshop on the topic “POSTER DESIGNING USING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP” on August 22, 2020. Mr. Manu Anthrayose, Lecturer – English and Soft Skills, Centre for Corporate Relations, Marketing, Placement and Training, Saintgits college of Engineering was the resource person.
  • Webinar on “Reliability and Lifetime prediction of Power Electronics Modules” on June 03, 2022. Er. Paul Paret, Researcher, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Colorado was the resource person.

IEEE IAS SBC SAINTGITS in association with IEEE IAS SBC CEK, IEEE IAS SBC SJCET as a part of LA GUERRE in association with IEEE IA/IE/PELS Jt.Chapter Kerala had conducted a webinar on the topic “LIGHTING”on11 May 2023 from 7pm to 8pm in online mode. Neethu Susan George, Specification Manager -Middle East, North & India at Lamp Worktitude for Light was the resource person for this webinar.

On 13th May 2023, IEEE IAS Student Branch Chapters from SJCET, Saintgits, and CEK, in collaboration with IEEE IA/IE/PELS Joint Chapter Kerala, organized a Membership Development Session titled “Benefits of IEEE Membership.” The session aimed to highlight the various advantages of being a member of IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), Industrial Electronics Society (IES), and Power Electronics Society (PELS).

The digital poster designing competition, “TECH VISION,” was organized by IEEE IAS SBC SJCET in collaboration with IEEE IAS SBC CEK and IEEE IAS SBC Saintgits as part of La Guerre in association with IEEE IA/IE/PELS Jt. Chapter Kerala”. The competition aimed to provide a platform for participants to showcase their creativity, design skills, and technological vision through digital posters.

IEEE IAS SBC SAINTGITS in association with IEEE Saintgits SB as a part of IEEE Day celebration 2023 conducted a quiz competition based on “Current Affairs” on 6th October 2023

The “Electrosync” project exhibition, organized by IEEE IAS SB SAINTGITS for S5 EEE students, took place on 7th December 2023. This exhibition served as a platform for showcasing Arduino-based projects, all centered around innovation. The event aimed to highlight the creativity and technical prowess of the participating students, while also fostering an environment conducive to exploration and experimentation.

The quiz competition QUIZZLE was organized by IEEE IAS SB Saintgits on the 18th March,2024. In this competition they faced a series of simulating challenges designed to access various subjects and formats.

The soldering competition “SOLDERO” was organized by IEEE IAS SB Saintgits on the 19th April, 2024. A soldering competition is an event where participants demonstrate their skills and expertise in soldering electronic components.

On 19th September 2024, IEEE IAS Student Branch Chapters of CE Kidangoor, SJCET and SAINGITS in collaboration with IEEE IA/IE/PELS Jt.Chapter Kerala, organized a membership development session titled “Propagate”.  The session aimed to highlight the various advantages of being a member of IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), Industrial Electronics Society (IES), and Power Electronics Society (PELS).

POWERNOVA: Power Electronics Trends in Solar Technology- technical talk session by Mr. Abhinav R, Director , Bumblebee Instruments Pvt Ltd on September 23, 2024. “POWERNOVA” was an insightful session focused on emerging trends in power electronics within the solar industry. The event was organized as part of La Guerre 2.0, in collaboration with IEEE IAS SBC SJCET, IEEE IAS SBC SAINTGITS, and IEEE IAS SBC CEK. Held on the 23rd of September 2024, the session aimed to provide participants with technical knowledge about the integration of power electronics in solar energy systems, a growing field in the renewable energy sector.

Linkedin Legends, Linkedin profile contest is an online non-technical contest organised by IEEE IAS SBC CE KIDANGOOR, IEEE IAS SBC SJCET and IEEE IAS SBC SAINGITS held as part of LA GUERRE  2.0, a cluster war competition hosted by IEEE IA/IE/PELS Jt.Chapter Kerala. The competition was held online and submission to be completed within 10 October 2024 at 8 PM.

Sparky Direct 2.0: Wiring Competition

On March 13, 2024, IEEE Power and Energy Society, Saintgits College of Engineering, organized Sparky Direct 2.0, a wiring competition held at the Basic Electrical and Electronics Workshop. Participants showcased their skills in electrical wiring and troubleshooting. The winners were Alen Thomas and Jino Manoj (1st), Kevin Cherian and Ajul Geo (2nd), and Shahazad Abdulla and Andrew Jos Sebastian (3rd). The event promoted teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving, fostering innovation and excellence.

Poster Making Competition: Preserving Biodiversity

The IEEE Power and Energy Society at Saintgits College of Engineering organized an online Poster Making Competition on “Preserving Biodiversity,” running from March 21 to April 2, 2024. The event aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation through artistic expression. Participants were encouraged to use their creativity and artistic skills to depict the significance of biodiversity conservation through their posters. Joel O. James won first prize of ₹1000, while Parvathy S. Nair secured second prize of ₹500.

Field Visit to ASAP Kunnanthanam

On April 20, 2024, IEEE PES conducted a field visit to the EV Centre of Excellence at ASAP Kunnanthanam’s Community Skill Park. 20 students attended the visit, exploring the world of electric vehicles (EVs). The visit covered maintenance and repair, installation of charging infrastructure, and battery testing, offering hands-on learning and insights into EV technology and its applications.

LinkedIn Profile Session – IEEE PES – August 9, 2024 

On August 9, 2024, IEEE Power and Energy Society,Saintgits, conducted a session on building a professional LinkedIn profile. The session was led by Mrudul John Mathews and 40 students attended the session. Participants learned the essential tips on optimizing their LinkedIn profiles for networking, career development, and job opportunities.

Field Visit to Poweron Industry

On 9th August 2024, IEEE PES and IAS organized a field visit to Poweron Industry, a manufacturer of MCB panels. About 35 students participated and gained practical insights into the manufacturing processes and applications of electrical components in industry.

Mini E-ATV Competition

The Mini E-ATV Competition 2024, organized by the IEEE Power and Energy Society and IEEE Students Branch of Saintgits College of Engineering in collaboration with IEEE PES Kerala section, was successfully conducted on 10th October 2024. This event served as a vibrant platform for students to showcase their engineering skills through the design and construction of mini electric all-terrain vehicles (E-ATVs).

The competition was formally inaugurated by Er. Harikumar K.P, Secretary, IEEE PES Kerala Chapter,Executive Engineer, KSEBL in the esteemed presence of Dr. Sudha T, Principal of Saintgits College of Engineering and Er.Punnoose George , Executive Chairman, Saintgits group of Institutions.

Twelve teams, each comprising five members, built their own mini E-ATVs and competed across seven challenging tracks. Students from Amrita Viswa College claimed the first prize of Rs 7000, St.Joseph College of Engineering & Technology won the second prize of Rs 5000, and Rajagiri School of Engineering secured the third prize of Rs 3000.

Expert Talk on Communication Systems in Power Systems

An expert talk on “Communication Systems in Power Systems” was organized by IEEE PES and IEEE students branch Saintgits College of Engineering on 10th October 2024 at the RB Seminar Hall, Saintgits College of Engineering. The session was led by Er.Harikumar K.P, Secretary, IEEE PES Kerala Chapter and Executive Engineer, KSEBL.

The session commenced at 10:00 AM with a welcome speech by Er.Filmy Francis, IEEE PES advisor. Er.Jisha James,Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering introduced the speaker Er. Harikumar K.P, an expert in the field of communication networks in  power systems, shared valuable insights into the critical role communication systems play in the modern electrical grid.

Key Highlights of the Talk:

●          The evolution of communication technologies in power system applications.

●          How smart grids rely on communication networks to monitor and manage energy distribution.

●          The integration of communication systems for real-time data collection and analysis, enhancing decision-making in power system operations.

●          The role of protocols like SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) in controlling and automating electrical systems.

●          Challenges and solutions in maintaining robust communication infrastructures within power systems.

The expert talk was a highly enriching experience for both students and faculty members, expanding their knowledge of the growing significance of communication systems in power engineering.The event concluded at 11:15 AM with a vote of thanks by Dr. Abraham George,IEEE SB counsellor.

Expert Talk on Electric Vehicles for School Students

An expert talk on Electric Vehicles (EVs) was conducted by IEEE PES and IEEE SB,Saintgits college of Engineering for school students,on 10th October 2024. The session aimed to introduce school students to the fundamentals of electric vehicles, their significance in sustainable transportation, and the career opportunities in this rapidly growing field.

The session commenced at 10:00 AM with a welcome speech by Er.Ancy Sara Varghese, IEEE IAS advisor.The resource person was Er. Vaishnav Nair S, Co-founder, Propulse Mobility.The speaker explained the evolution of electric vehicles, their components, and how they differ from conventional vehicles.The talk highlighted how EVs contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependency on fossil fuels. The expert discussed upcoming trends in the EV sector, including autonomous driving and advancements in battery technology.

The session was attended by 39 enthusiastic higher secondary school students, accompanied by their teachers.Students actively engaged in the discussion,asking insightful questions about EV technology and its real-world applications.The event concluded at 11:00 AM with a vote of thanks delivered by Fayaz Khan,vice chairman,IEEE PES,saintgits.

Mini EV Competition

The Mini EV Competition 2024, organized by the IEEE Power and Energy Society and  IEEE Students Branch of Saintgits College of Engineering, was successfully conducted on 10th of October 2024. This event served as a vibrant platform for students to build mini electric vehicles (EVs).

The competition was formally inaugurated by Er. Harikumar K.P, Secretary, IEEE PES Kerala Chapter,Executive Engineer, KSEBL in the esteemed presence of Dr. Sudha T, Principal of Saintgits College of Engineering and Er.Punnoose George , Executive chairman,Saintgits group of Institutions.

 Ten teams from higher Secondary Schools in Kottayam district, built their own mini EVs and competed across challenging tracks.

Quiz Competition

The Quiz Competition on electric vehicles was organized by the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) in collaboration with the IEEE Students Branch of Saintgits College of Engineering, was conducted for higher secondary school students on 10th October 2024. The session aimed to introduce the concept of electric vehicles and their significance in sustainable transportation. A total of 39 students from various schools participated in the competition, and the winners were honoured with awards.

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE)

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE), Saintgits Chapter, organized a talk session on  “Women’s Equality Day”.The session was handled by Dr Sherine Allena Joseph, Placement Department  of Saintgits College of Engineering . The webinar started at 07.30 PM and lasted until 8.30 PM. The session was anchored by IEEE WIE Vice Chair Meekhal Ann Mathews. IEEE WIE  Chair  Jeslin James introduced the session speaker and IEEE WIE Secretary Liyana N concluded the session with a vote of thanks.

There were 55 participants for the webinar from all the engineering branches of which 40 were IEEE members. The webinar was covered with the significance of promoting equal rights and opportunities for women.

IEEE WIE and SB organized two day workshop on Electrical Design and Wiring Workshop for students of Electrical and Electronics Engineering on 7/8/2024 and 8/8/2024. On 7/8/2024 the workshop started with introductory class and layout explanation by lab staff. On the next day hands-on sessions was conducted. Wiring of a house with two bedroom, living room and kitchen was done. The class was handled by technical staff. There were a total of 57 students, in which 45 students were IEEE members and 12 were Non IEEE members. The two day workshop was highly informative and very useful.

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE), Saintgits Chapter, organized a social visit to Kerala Balagram Orphanage Kottayam on 31/08/2024. The program was anchored by IEEE WIE Chair Jeslin James and inductory talk was given by Abhirami of S3 RB. The visit started with a talk by Mrs Beena, Secretary of Balagram Orphanage on history of Kerala Balagram. There were many cultural programs and game sessions by students of both Saintgits and Balagram. We provided lunch and snacks to inmates of Balagram. Dr Fossy Mary Chacko and Er Aparna Thampi accompanied the students for the visit. There were 10 IEEE members for the visit.

ASSOCIATION OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS(PHASE)
The association has been instrumental in providing the students an exposure to recent advancements in the area of Electrical Engineering. The technical fest “DYUTHI” is organized and conducted by Association of Electrical Engineering Students every year providing an excellent platform for the upcoming electrical
engineers to showcase their talents and technical know-how. The various events of “DYUTHI” indulge a total cash price worth 1 lakh and the main events streamed are:
